The Pet Sitter vs. Boarding...Who is the Winner?

Updated: Mar 28

You're planning a vacation and you aren't quite sure who will care for your pets while you're gone. Should you hire a pet sitter? Should you board your pets? I'm sure there are many of you out there that will argue the pros and cons to both sides. And, because I am a pet sitter, I should probably be telling you to only hire a pet sitter. But, I won't. It's up to you, as the owner, to know your dog. You have to decide whether or not a pet sitter is the best fit for you or if boarding is the way to go. Both have a lot to offer in their own ways. Personally, I'd like to add that I think there is a huge benefit to using a doggy day camp along with a pet sitter. You don't have to choose one over the other.

The Pet Sitter

One of the main benefits of hiring a pet sitter is that your pets stay at home, in their own environment, where they feel safe and comfortable. As a pet sitter, I can provide you with several different options. We can plan multiple visits throughout the day to include breakfast, a midday break, dinner and of course that last call before bedtime. In addition to these visits there is also the option of an overnight stay. I will stay in your home for the duration of the night for that added security for both you and your pets. As mentioned earlier, the choice of your pets going to day camp is also available. I can provide a morning visit and then bring them to day camp to play for the day. At the end of the day, I will bring them home. They will have dinner and look forward to relaxing in the comfort of their own home for the night. During our meet and greet, we can go over all your needs and come up with the best care plan for you.

Because I am a pet sitter, I can only offer advice on boarding. Not all kennels are created equal just like not all pet sitters are alike. Visit the boarding facility. Meet the owner. You should feel comfortable with where your pets will be living for the duration of your vacation. I highly recommend a place that includes doggy day camp as part of the whole experience. This is where your pets will reap the benefits of socialization through pack interaction and play.

And the winner is?

BOTH. Both are winners.

Our pets mean the world to us. I cannot stress enough...DO YOUR RESEARCH! Ask around. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to find the right fit for you. Meet different pet sitters. Visit different boarding facilities. Many choose to hire a pet sitter. Many choose to board. There are options out there. You just have to find the right one for you!
